I have always found it fun in my search for books at yard sales, thrift stores or book sales to come across books that have been signed by the author.  And I have always enjoyed attending book signing events at book stores or other places, such as book festivals.  When I was manager of a book store, I found that booksigning events at our store almost always attracted a lot of book enthusiasts.

Powell’s Books in Portland, Oregon has an unusually large number of booksignings each year.  I receive an email update periodically which includes their booksigning event schedule and other book related events at their store, such as readings, workshops, and discussion groups.  There event schedule is packed full!  The latest email update I received from them contained the following statement, “We’re lucky. Every year hundreds of authors tread on our turf. They read from their work, meet their fans, and sign thousands of books.”  Their October 2010 schedule includes 60 booksigning events.   Oh, to live in the Portland area just to be able to attend some of those events!

As I viewed Powells.com today, I noted that on their daily bestsellers list three of their Top 10 bestsellers today are preorders of signed editons, including Rick Riordan’s upcoming release “The Lost Hero (Heroes of Olympus #01)” at #2 on the list, Emma Donoghue’s “Room” at #3, and John Valliant’s “The Tiger” at #8.
