We are all being deluged with politics right now. Most people complain about hearing too much about the elections, but I have to admit that I really enjoy it. I love to watch CNN and keep up with the latest political news. There are lots of books about politics to read - from books on the individual candidates to books on the Democratic and Republican Parties. The choices are wide and vast. I’ve made a list of some books that might be of interest to you. Any of these books can be purchased through Amazon.com. I hope you’ll find the list helpful and that your candidate wins (as long as he/she is a Democrat!). If you know of a good book on a candidate or on politics, share it with us!

“So You Want to Be President” is a Caldecott winner from several years ago. It has fun pictures and was recently updated to include George W. Bush on the page talking about names (we have had 3 presidents named George - but had only had 2 when the book was written) and the page showing relatives who had both been president. A fun book that will have to be updated again because John McCain will be another John to add to the name page or Barack Obama will be the first African-American.
“My Teacher for President” is fun because the little boy thinks his teacher would be good because she likes to keep peace, is used to people following her (a class instead of Secret Service), etc. The drawings are very cute!
“Grace For President” explains the Electoral College in kid-friendly terms.
“My Dad, John McCain” is written by his daughter Meghan and is a beautifully illustrated book. It is very sweet and you can just see her love for her daddy. I thought it was interesting that she doesn’t mention his first wife or her step-siblings, just her two brothers and adopted sister. I also thought it would be hard to write about your dad being tortured in a prison camp.
I haven’t found a children’s Obama book I liked as much as this one. I think there are more coming out so maybe I’ll find one later. My library has several on each candidate but the one by Meghan McCain is the most appropriate for K-2 children.
